About Our Buoys
The
SmartBay Buoy Program includes a 3 metre Meteorological / Oceanographic Buoy (Buoy 1)
near the mouth of Placentia Bay, two smaller Water Quality Buoys: at the mouth of Mortier Bay
(Buoy 3) and at Come By Chance Point (Buoy 2), and a Wave Buoy south-east of Red Island near the Pilot Boarding Station (Buoy 4). Our Water Quality Buoys also provide additional information such as wind speed, wind direction and, for Buoy 2, wave height.
Real-time and archived data from our buoys is freely available to the public and is used by SmartBay.ca to develop the custom weather and sea-state forecasts for Placentia Bay provided on this site.
Our initial
meteorological / oceanographic buoy (Buoy 1) was launched on August 18, 2006.
Buoy 2 at Come By Chance Point is equipped with a bottom-mounted ADCP providing
full current and wave information. This installation was made possible through a
contribution from Newfoundland
and Labrador Refining Corporation.
